Portraits are probably the most difficult subject for me to draw, yet most rewarding.
I have been drawing serious and caricature portraits for several years and will do custom work from photos or life.

I did this as a project for a drawing class at ASU. I used toned (grey) paper, ink (caligraphy pen and indian ink and tech. pens), charcoal, and "white charcoal". You can buy laser copies of this including a mat and frame for $50.

I did this as a gift for my sister 1998 or 1997. it is ink (ballpoint).

Again with the toned paper/ ink and white charcoal.

I think caricatures can be serious (or funny). This is from a scene of ony of my favorite movies: "The Pianist".
